I saw Millennium Actress for the first time last year, knowing nothing about it other than the short tv description and was instantly hooked. The montage this score is used over, when Chiyoko is running through different eras, is my favourite scene and the music makes it perfect. It still sometimes pops into my head randomly and I love it all the more.

After having listened to various of Hirasawa's best albums I'm convinced the guy's a gift to humanity, really. A true light being from a distant place showing us how his beautiful home is. I strongly believe these feelings he conveys through his music can actually become our future, hopefully. A world where science and spirituality coexist and work together to propel us into a new light era. I'm just, grateful to be alive in this time period along with him, he has shared many beautiful gifts with the world...

Millennium actress isn’t only a story about Chiyoko chasing after the man who gave her the key. It’s as much about the TV interviewer, Tachibana, chasing after Chiyoko, without her ever realising it. Chiyoko is running after someone else, but Tachibana is running after her, always rescuing her, because he is in love with her. And in the end, when Chiyoko tells that it was truly the chase after the man what she really loved, it must leave Tachibana conflicted, right? Was it really Chiyoko who he loved, or also just the chase after her? Kon must have made this film having those people in mind who are so in love with somebody that they can’t, for some reason, never have. Still they keep chasing after them even though somewhere deep they know, the other person will never love them back. And it’s just a hopeless fire. But just like the case was with Chiyoko, maybe that love isn’t always meant to be requited, like she realised. So with this film Kon raises the question, do we need love in this world that is likely never requited but still always sought after? Love that stays hidden forever. Perhaps the point of this film is to give reassurance that if you chase after someone who most likely will never find out that you love them, it’s ok. Keep chasing. Because in the end, it was the chase you really loved, right? It was the Run, you only deserved.

I shall not speak of it for too long for fear of revealing too much. I don't want to sound pretentious like I have all the answers. But I have seen the magic. I have always been running away, Thinking that I'm trapped inside a fog- Not realizing that within the fog is the essence of who I am. Like Abbas kiarostami once said, "I've often noticed that we are not able to look at what we have in front of us, unless it's inside a frame". Great art is like that. Satoshi Kon has that exact same spell that casts itself upon the world- Deeming everything magical and fearefully and wonderfully made. This song is extremely important to my life. I have been running my entire life. Running from everything. Like a Wild Horse. However, I've been naive to think that I'm alone in this. We are all running- For there is nothing to do but run. People like Satoshi Kon, however, show us that there is a certain Magic with which we can run. It's like we can see it, but we choose to ignore it. The naive creatures that we are, we need people like Kon and Hirasawa Susumu to show us this magic- But in bits and pieces. Too much and we'll run away. Too little and we'll get bored. Run- But do it like an artist. Like a magician crafting the final act. Play this game- But also look at yourself playing the game. Constantly watch yourself in the act. Soon enough you'll realize you're an actor. How good you are it depends on you. Run with the wind. Run- but do it with a smile. Exactly like a wild horse~ Free and profound. Let's all run with adventure in our hearts. Forget the destination. Forget everything. Just take that next step. Enjoy the journey.
